Racing for life!July 24, 2013 7:40 pm
The Race for Life is the UK’s biggest fight against cancer and the largest women-only fundraising event in the UK. Across the country there are over 230 5km and 10km events, all raising money for Cancer Research. 700,000 women are estimated to have taken part in this year’s events, raising an incredible £60million for the charity.
I was lucky enough to take part in this year’s Portsmouth Race for Life, nervously opting for the 10km race with my super fit best friend. Cancer Research is a charity particularly close to both of our hearts, and it seemed that we were not the only ones. Crowds of women gathered by the seafront dressed in all sorts of wacky outfits (pink of course), all with personal messages written on their backs showing everyone’s individual reasons for running. The most popular messages included running in memory of loved ones as well as running for a cure for cancer.
Unfortunately race day had fallen on one of the hottest days of the year- not ideal running conditions. But this didn’t deter anyone’s spirits as we crossed the start line after a raucous group countdown. Hundreds of women walked, jogged, ran and even danced the course- beautifully set along the Portsmouth seafront. The incredible spirits and unity of the women was incredible- all united by one thing- to beat cancer.
Crossing the line was such an incredible feeling, and wearing my medal at the end made me feel like I had really made a difference. An amazing day!
Charity races don’t only take place all over the country, but all over the world for many extremely worthy causes. FTT Global can make the money raised for these life changing charities go further if an international payment provider is used instead of a bank transfer when sending money overseas.
