About the Czech Koruna

The official currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech Koruna. 1 crown consists of 100 hellers, however heller coins have not been issued since September 1 2008. The heller was removed from circulation as a result of diminishing purchasing power.

The Czech Koruna came into existence in 1993 when Czechoslovakia became the Czech Republic and the Slovak republic. The Czech Koruna was instantly valued at considerably more than the Slovakian Koruna. Since its development the country has experienced a decrease in its inflation rates, which has provided an improvement for the value of the currency as a whole.

The Czech Republic had planned to adopt the Euro in 2012, but the transition was postponed in 2007 due to debate within the country. An exact date had not been set up, but the Finance Ministry described adoption by 2012 as realistic.

  • The most popular Czech Koruna exchange rate is the EUR to CZK rate.
  • Coins are issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 korun and the banknotes issued in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 5000 korun.
