All Eyes on AustriaMay 21, 2014 10:45 am
All eyes are on Austria right now. Having won the Eurovision Song contest with their entry earlier this month, the country has continued its winning streak with its capital city, Vienna, being named as the best city in the world for quality of life.
Based on various political, economic and environmental factors, among other criteria, Vienna has been ranked as the most liveable city, according to the 2014 Mercer Quality of Living Survey. Boasting a plethora of museums, art galleries and opera houses, Vienna has a reputation for being one of the safest cities of its size in Europe. Other factors that contribute to its high ranking are its well-developed education systems and relatively low pollution levels.
Also appearing in the top five is Zurich, Switzerland. Home to a large number of banks and international companies, Zurich is one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. So a few Swiss Francs or two certainly wouldn’t go amiss on a trip to this economic hub. Zurich is also known for its sophisticated public transit network and stable political system.
2014 also sees Auckland, New Zealand make a reappearance in the top five, upgrading from third to fourth position. A repeat contender in top 10 city lists, Auckland is renowned for its lovely climate and world class university.
Less fortunately for the USA, very few of its cities made an appearance on the list. Amongst some of the worst ranking cities are Miami, scoring in at 65. Personally I couldn’t think of anything better than a little rest and relaxation on its white sandy beaches. Ok it may not be the safest city in the world, but nothing beats that Florida sunshine and a mojito or two in the party capital that is Miami. Well, Miami gets my vote!
